Track Seven: One With You

“Lover of my soul, Giver of all things, Source of life and strength. I am one with you”

Here are we are! The title song.

This is the song that started it all. What do I mean by that? In earlier blogs I’ve written about not knowing how to talk about God in a meaningful way. I had learned a lot and developed a very intellectual point of view on all things spiritual. What I lacked was the experience of the Divine that truly informs spiritual ideas and insights. As I entered 2009 I knew something about my life would change. Finding a spiritual home has placed me on a path of forgiveness, healing and wholeness that I did not know what fully possibly as I entered the new year.

Not long after finding my home, I took a class….Prayer 101. Not knowing what I would experience I was excited about our first assignment: write down names for God…the God of your understanding. The next morning I woke up early, opened my journal and wrote down the first things that came to my head. After writing for about 5 minutes I looked back at all of the names I could come up with for that which we call God. As I saw these words:

Lover of my soul

Giver of all things

Source of life

Source of strength

I thought to myself, “There’s a song in here”. No sooner than the thought came I immediately began to sing the melody of “One With You” using the words I had just written. It was a beautiful, powerful and overwhelming experience. I sang the song over and over as tears streamed down my face. It solidified for me in that moment who and what God is to ME. It is my heartfelt belief that until we can articulate our individual experience of the Divine, we will not be able to fully express all that we are in the world. Once we are able to articulate that, the next realization comes that we are one with all that is. We are one with God. As we are created in the likeness and image of the Creator, the Creator’s DNA resides in us. We can look at the trees, the birds, the flowers and know that we are connected. We can look in the eyes of a child or a complete stranger and see that behind the veil of our bodies we are one.

I couldn’t wait to record this! After my day at work I went straight to my studio and began to play and sing the song. It was in that moment that the build up and ending came together. None of it was planned I just let it come through me. The recording you hear on the album was only second time I had ever played or sung the song. From a technical perspective there were things I wanted to change about the vocal and I always planned on recording a new vocal. The reason I ultimately kept it is the raw passion, love and joy that is present in that vocal. I felt every word in every fiber of my being as I sang and I think you can hear and feel that on the recording.

While I am sure I will be singing this song for many, many years to come, I will never being able to recreate that original feeling from the day this song first came into being. I am grateful for this recording and that I am able to share it with the world.
