Behind The Song: One Moment
Track Ten: One Moment

Wow we’re almost at the end!
“One Moment” is a song that I always new would be on my first album. It is a song I wrote many years ago back in 1995. I was 19 at the time and had just finished my freshman year at Morgan State University in Baltimore. I has so many great experiences in that first year and learned a lot about life and about myself. When it came to women and relationships however, I still had a lot to learn. At the time I thought that I would instantly find the “perfect” woman for me. I was looking for the woman that really got me and totally accepted me. When I didn’t find that, I shut down.
I decided to spend my Summer working at Walt Disney World in Orlando through the Walt Disney World College Program. To this day that is still one of the best decisions I ever made and holds so many great memories. While living in Orlando and working for the Mouse, I met people from every corner of the world and all walks of life. My world and my life was expanded in ways I had not anticipated. In this new space of magic, wonder and possibility I was able to open up and embrace more of myself. What I realize now is that this is really all that was ever required of me in the first place. I could have found what I was looking for in Baltimore, Kalamazoo or Boise. Just like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, the way home was always right there with me.
I wasn’t able to take my keyboard with me for the Summer but I was fortunate enough to use the practice rooms at Epcot Center to continue my songwriting. It was in those songwriting sessions that “One Moment” was written. I thought about the friendships I was forming. The new conversations I was having and the women I was meeting that did “get me”. I thought about all of the feelings I had before I left for Disney and all of the doubts I had about myself and realized that it truly only takes a moment for life to change. God had placed all of these beautiful people, experiences and adventures in my life to teach me this lesson. I am thankful that I was able to crystallize it with this song.
When you listen to the song you can hear the Disney influence. It’s still one of my lifelong dreams to compose a song for a Disney film. Who knows, maybe this is the one!
